Adria Petty: NU-6

"Nowness RSS" 28 Jan 2012, 6:00 am CET

Adria Petty: NU-6 Saturday, January 28, 2012

Hauntingly shot in black and white and accompanied by a cacophonous and angular score, LA-based filmmaker Adria Petty shares her latest film, NU-6. After suffering two ruptured eardrums and near deafness, the director of music videos for Beyoncé and Regina Spektor experienced a surreal episode while taking hospital hearing exam “NU-6,” induced by its strangely evocative test words such as “love,” “home” and “void.” “I felt the words I had to repeat were intimate. They had thoughts and images and history connected to them,” explains Petty, daughter of rock music legend Tom. “I felt embarrassed saying them in front of a stranger and I wanted to express that internal monologue,” she adds. Filmed over a single day, the film follows model Jessica Cook through the halls of a hospital and into a testing room where she is launched into an increasingly abstract and frightening space of inner-consciousness, fantasy and illusion. Citing influences such as Godard, Buñuel and The Twilight Zone, Petty found the filming process itself cathartic. “It was a very special experience because it was quick and spontaneous and creative for the sake of creativity alone,” she says.

creep hiroshi awai mens fall winter 2012 01 First Look | CREEP by Hiroshi Awai Autumn/Winter 2012 Looks

Hiroshi Awai’s CREEP line is based up in Canada and designed with Japanese sensibilities. What that means is left to discussion. What we know is that season after season, CREEP offers looks and cuts that pull heavy from the designer’s background and, more importantly, the collection is distributed well throughout North America. The fleece, above, is a great look that pulls from those classic 90’s mountain garbs – modernized of course. CREEP works.

J. Crew Ludlow Suit Shop – Opening in TriBeCa

J. Crew Ludlow Suit Shop - Opening in TriBeCa

If you’re in the vicinity of TriBeCa next month, get ready to have fun saying: “Honey, I’m off to the haberdashery.”

That is when J. Crew plans to open The Ludlow Shop, a 2,100-square-foot space boasting an assortment of their Ludlow suits along with Thomas Mason shirts, Italian leather shoes, and ties. Tailors and suit wizards will be at the ready to fit the suit to the man, and then monogram the suit with the man’s initials, should it come to that. The eminently wearable—and adaptable (survey the ad campaign after the jump)—collection tops out at $1,500 for a Ludlow made from Italian cashmere.

As for the slim-fitting two-piece at the center of all the excitement, it debuted three years ago at The Liquor Store, also in the neighborhood, but demand has grown to the point that it now needs its own mailing address. -jt

Le Bazar Des Poilus – A Pop-up store at Hotel Jules & Jim in Paris

le bazar des poilus 3 Le Bazar Des Poilus A Pop up store at Hotel Jules & Jim in Paris

Culling inspiration from Kubrick’s Paths of Glory, Le Bazar Des Poilus—a pop-up store at Hotel Jules & Jim in Paris—escaped the grim realities of WWI trench warfare with a few finer style points still strapped to the back. Vintage shoes, boots and sneakers, workwear and army issue fatigues, coats and woolens all held court at this collaboration between French online lifestyle mag Hell’s Kitchen and Leonard Vintage Shop in Lyons. Read all about it here … if you can read French.

We’d like to get our hands on the “Belt On” Levis Casuals pictured after the jump, but something tells us that the $4.98 price tag is as old as the pants. -jt

Sennheiser RS 220 Wireless Headphones – The New Standard?

Selectism.com 27 Jan 2012, 7:00 pm CET

sennheiser rs220 wireless headphones 1 Sennheiser RS 220 Wireless Headphones The New Standard?

Sennheiser is touting their new RS 220 ($600) Wireless headphones as playing in the same league as their Sennheiser HD 600 Sennheiser RS 220 Wireless Headphones The New Standard? series wired headphones – which themselves are considered industry standard in entry to mid-level audiophile headphones. The idea that a wireless headphone such as the RS 220 could compete on this level is a high step forward in technology itself.

The conversation regarding the Sennheiser RS220 v. Sennheiser HD600 has already begun on the fanatic forums. We ourselves are desperately awaiting a review pair to compare to our own set of HD 650 Sennheiser RS 220 Wireless Headphones The New Standard?, just one small step up from the 600. The RS220 comes priced at around $600, just about $250-$275 more than the wired HD600. If they can indeed pull off the high end sound of their wired brothers, the RS220 may be this year’s headphone game changer.

For an excellent Sennheiser wireless headphone for half the money, consider the Sennheiser RS 180 Sennheiser RS 220 Wireless Headphones The New Standard?.

Slim-Fit Shirts Ain’t Trad?

Ivy Style 27 Jan 2012, 6:25 pm CET

To those who complain that slim-fit shirts are evidence of Brooks Brothers having lost its way, the brethren have offered them for at least 25 years, as this late ’80s catalog shows. In general, WASPy preppy types have preferred a generous cut to their clothing, and the sack suit got its name for [...]

CAMO (Italy) Autumn/Winter 2012 - Full Looks

Slightly early, we know, for a full look, but Italy’s CAMO could not resist sharing. As we mentioned from Pitti, the new CAMO collection works around the “Casino” theme based around those all important chips.

CAMO’s “Casino Collection” asks for you to “bet on yourself.” The four main colors of casino chips influence more than 100 garments in the collection – their largest collection yet. Be it a card game inside your home, pub, or casino, CAMO reminds us that risk is important.

Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees – Unicorn Leather in Dijon and Wasabi

Selectism.com 27 Jan 2012, 5:45 pm CET

clarks wallabee oipolloi specials 6 Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees Unicorn Leather in Dijon and Wasabi

That’s right… unicorn leather. The new Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees use what is known as “unicorn leather” – “the name given to elk hides by the specialist tannery tasked with producing the raw materials.” Elk and deer hides are super supple and these Clarks will be no exception. Choose from two colorways – dijon and wasabi – both of which may be some of best we have seen in 2012 so far. The green hue (wasabi) elk leather on the Wallabee is impressive.

Available in limited numbers from Oi Polloi. #need

Rolling Stone Italy Debuts Rock & Roll Style, Vol.01

Selectism.com 27 Jan 2012, 4:30 pm CET

rolling stone rock roll style issue 01 1 Rolling Stone Italy Debuts Rock & Roll Style, Vol.01

One of the take homes from this past Pitti was a strong periodical from the minds behind Rolling Stone Italia.

Specially produced for the Italian reader during Pitti and Milan Fashion Week, Rolling Stone Italia’s Rock & Roll Style, Volume 1 is as well thought out men’s fashion and lifestyle publication that is of very high production. Photography and topics inside the publication remain current and tend to the needs of the Italian gentleman reading them. Inside readers will find everything from fashion tips, reviews, detailed schematics of Brooks Saddles and Victorinox knives.

Props should be given to the staff at Rolling Stone Italy for putting this issue together. Clearly they worked overtime in bringing this special project to the market. It looks fantastic as you can see from my well read copy above.

If Rock and Roll Style featured split Italian/English text, it would give many of the men’s magazines on the market today a serious run for their money. Did we mention that it is a free publication?

An Actress & Bobby Bland by G. Bruce Boyer

The Trad 27 Jan 2012, 3:48 pm CET

Smooth doesn't come close enough L to R, Little Junior Parker, Elvis Presley and Bobby Bland "I think the year was 1963, and my date was a young Broadway actress who became my first wife. I can't remember the name of the club in downtown Brooklyn for the life of me. Seeing Bobby Bland that night helped get me into the relationship, but the marriage didn't go so well and I had to get out of it myself." G. Bruce Boyer Bobby “Blue” Bland was born Robert Calvin Bland in Rosemark, Tennessee in 1930. The “Blue” didn’t come into his name until his family had moved to Memphis and he started hanging around the blues joints along notorious Beale Street with cats like B. B. (Blues Boy) King and Johnny Ace.
"If Beale Street could talk, if Beale Street could talk, So many married men would take their beds up and walk. Except one or two who never drink booze, And the blind man on the corner singin’ the Beale Street Blues."
By 1950 Bland started singing with – according to music historian Albin J. Zak – a “loose conglomeration of musicians known as The Beale Streeters. Besides Ace on piano, the group included B. B. King on guitar, Earl Forest on drums, Billy Duncan on saxophone”, with Bobby supplying the vocals, as well as working for other blues musicians doing any odd jobs. For a while he was B. B. King’s driver after the guitar player and singer had several hit records. Bland himself cut his first record in 1952, about the time a young Elvis Presley probably would have first heard and seen him around that part of town.
He quickly became a part of what was in the air, the incendiary blending of gospel-blues-R&B music that was being developed by Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Chuck Berry, James Brown and other early 50s musicians into what became known as Rock ‘n Roll. But it wasn’t until four years after he’d first stepped into the recording studio that Bland cut the song that made him: “Farther on Up the Road”. Thereafter he had hit after hit on the R&B charts – in 1961 he was named #1 Artist of the Year by Cashbox -- even though he never managed to cross over to white audiences then or later. Bland had a unique voice and style, an unforgettable blend of sweetness and hoarseness, alternately smooth and rough like seersucker, that could whisper like velvet one minute and growl like a wounded tiger the next. The songs that he recorded in the late 50s and early 60s – “Farther on Up the Road”, “I Pity the Fool”, “Cry, Cry, Cry”, Turn on Your Love Light”, and “That’s the Way Love Is” remain exemplars of that incomparable style today. That’s the short early history of Bland. What isn’t usually noted, perhaps not even remembered, is the power and charisma of the man on stage. I only heard him once in a club in Brooklyn, but it was enough to know he had an incredible stage presence. He wasn’t overtly or typically handsome, but he made up for it in pure scintillating style. His dress was as cool as you could find: slicked back hair which fell to the side in waves, lustrous laser cut mohair suits of pristine Continental styling, blindingly white dress shirts, highly polished black Chelsea boots with Cuban heels, and that gigolo-thin mustache. And his demeanor charged with sensuality as he leaned into the driving melody. The women in the audience went wild for Bobby Blue Bland, screaming rapturously with every little gesture or cooing sound he made. They would have torn him from the stage and been on him like a dog on a bone. Everything about him shimmered in the limelight. Sam Cooke was more handsome, Ray Charles a more creative talent, B. B. King and Chuck Berry had longer and bigger careers, James Brown more influential, and Little Richard and Fats Domino appealed more to the teenagers. But as the big band trumpets and saxes blared out their pulsating tempo, the T-Bone Walker-style guitar filling in the staccato blues notes, the drummer punching away, and Bobby repeating “I pity the fool, I pity the fool, I pity the fool” while cradling the mike in a provocative embrace and rhythmically swaying from side to side, he was one of the sexiest performer to ever come out of R&B. And the most undeservedly unknown to the general public.
So you take it where you find it, or leave it like it is. That's the way it's always been. That's the way love is.
